Chernivtsi

Scott Jackson is a recent graduate of Villanova University where he received a BS degree in finance and was part of the crew and volleyball teams. Hailing from New York City, Scott worked for Patagonia and looks to expand his love for the outdoors in beautiful western Ukraine. He is serving in Chernivtsi, where he is teaching business English, economics, hotel management, and U.S. stock holding activity at the Chernivtsi, State Industrial Technicum.

Kelly Dwyer dwyerk@hotmail.com, is a graduate from Boston College. She is originally from the Chicago, Illinois area. She teaches English in the city of Chevnivtsi.

Delyna

Stephen Lapolla saverio313@hotmail.com, is from Albany, New York. He graduated from Marist College where he majored in History and received his New York State teacher's certification. Steve enjoys camping and hiking. Steve teaches English in Dolyna in the Ivano-Frankvik Oblast. Delyna is a beautiful located right at the base of the Carpathian Mountains.

Glyboka

Cindy Wang Archimedes@hualumni.com, is a recent graduate who is a TEFL volunteer in the town of Glyboka (Chevernivtsi Oblast). She likes to read literature, philosophy, science fiction, and on any science subject (particularly astronomy and biochemistry). She also enjoys an occasional game of tennis. Simon and Garfunkel are her favorite singers and Audrey Hepburn and Richard Gere are her favorite actors. Beethoven's 5th symphony, 3rd movement and Pachelbel's Canon in D are her favorite classical pieces. Her favorite musical instrument is the saxophone. She likes being spontaneous though one would never guess at a glance. She wants to have a Siberian Husky named Copernicus, but her small Paddington Bear is company enough for now. She is passionate about education and if she were not employed in this field she would be working at LEGO headquarters in Denmark. She teaches conversational English and Cultural Studies at a lyceum in Glyboka. It is a small town of about 10,000. A lot of animals peck about the streets. Occasionally, you can catch an old man chasing a flock of geese away from his yard with a broom. The lyceum has many bright students some of which shuttle regularly to the prestigious Chevernitsi National University for classes. The motivate director and staff are very friendly.

Ivano-Frankivsk

Charlie McCollum cmccollu@yahoo.com, has a B.S. in Physics. He has worked as a high school Math teacher, computer programmer, and was an earlier volunteer with the Peace Corps in Nepal from 1996 to 1997. His interests are simple natural living, physical activities, environmental issues, hiking, traveling, learning about new cultures, swimming, and chess. He is working in Ivano-Frankisvk Teacher Training Institute in the foothills of the Carpathian Mountains.

Stephanie Plageman is from Cincinnati, Ohio and holds a BA degree from Miami University of Ohio. Currently, she lives in Ivano-Frankivsk and teaches Business English at the Ivano-Frankivsk Technology University of Oil & Gas. Ivano-Frankivsk is a city of approximately 240,000 people and is situated at the base of the Carpathian Mountain Range.

Craig Potter lives and works in Ivano-Frankivsk with his wife, Kimberly. He teaches English and country studies at a lyceum specializing in science. As a secondary project, he enjoys the challenge of teaching ESL teaching methods at the local university. In his spare time he likes hiking in the Carpathian mountains, running, and reading.

Kimberly Potter is from Spokane, Washington.  She received an English degree in Literature and Writing from Oregon State University in 1993.  After working in newspapers for 3 years, she moved with her husband Craig to the Micronesian Island of Saipan (Northern Marianas), where she taught 3rd grade for 3 years at an American Public School.  The Potters are currently serving in the Western Ukrainian city of Ivano-Frankivsk, where Kimberly teaches basic English and Business concepts in English at the Ivano-Frankivsk Management Institute and Lyceum.  She also teaches high school students part-time at Specialized School #11.  She is busy with various projects such as feeding her husband, conducting a community English club, revising business textbooks for her institute, and developing a lesson plan manual for Ukrainian secondary schools.  In her free time Kimberly likes to read, cook, walk (or run)  about the city, spend time with her Ukrainian friends, hang out at the Bistritsya River, and go traveling and hiking with her husband.

Kalush

Juan Carlos Campos, from San Juan, Puerto Rico, has a Bachelor's degree in Journalism from the University of Georgia and an MBA from the University of Texas. He worked for over two years in the Puerto Rico Economic Development Administration and three years in Washington, DC, at the Puerto Rico Federal Affairs Administration. In the Peace Corps, he serves as a business facilitator in Kalush in the Ivano-Frankivsk oblast. He is working with the city administration of Kalush in issues of economic development, privatization, and tourism development. Kalush is a charming small town of 70,000 inhabitants. It is located 30 minutes from the city of Ivano-Frankivsk, where the foothills of the Carpathian Mountains begin to appear.

Ann Duncan aeduncan98@yahoo.com, graduated from Colby College in May 2000 where she majored in Russian History, Philosophy, and Government. Prior to joining the Peace Corps, she was an intern at Scholastic, Inc, NYC, NY in the State Museum, and at the Irish Center for Migration Studies, Cork, Ireland. Most recently she worked for the Gore-Lieberman Presidential Campaign. Currently, Ann works and lives in the beautiful town of Kalvsh in Ivano-Frankisk Oblast in Western Ukraine. She teaches at school # 2 and 3 and at the Gymnasium. Her interests outside of teaching include running, politics, and art history. Ann hopes to one day return to Ukraine as the American Ambassador.

Kosiv

Angela Matusik is from Orlando, Florida. She received her bachelor's degree in Anthropology in 1991 from Eckerd College in St. Petersburg, Florida prior to working as an archaeologist in the US and Latin America. In 1997, she received her master's degree in Urban Planning (international/economic development, not zoning/architecture) from the University of California Los Angeles. Angela worked for the United Way in Austin, Texas for a year before moving into the private sector to work as a project manager/trainer for a small software company. She currently serves in the beautiful, small town of Kosiv, located in the Ivano-Frankivsk Oblast. As a Regional Community Development Coordinator, she is helping to develop "green" tourism.

Rohatyn

Felicity Gatchell teaches Conversational English in a high school in Rohatyn in Western Ukraine.  For many years she has worked with children in enrichment programs and encouraging them to be more globally aware.  Over the past ten years she has been assisting in disasters with the Red Cross as an RN both in Alabama and across the U.S.

Paul Gatchell graduated from Iowa State University.  He teaches English Conversation via topics including environmental, drama, music and world awareness at the Gymnasium in Rohatyn, Ivano-Frankovsk Oblast.

Uzhgorod

Elaine Donnelly is a PC volunteer in Uzhgorod and teaches at secondary school #8. She graduated from Boston College with degrees in Studio Art and English. After working for a few years as a graphic designer (mostly magazines and book covers) and as a painter in Boston, MA, Elaine joined Peace Corps Ukraine with TEFL group 16.

Kristina Jeffers sephora78@hotmail.com made a general nuisance of herself on the campus of University of Oregon for four years and ended up with degrees in Political Science and Russian in the winter of '99. She spent the spring backpacking from Warsaw, Poland to Duorovnik, Croatia. She found herself poor and sunburned and decided to join Peace Corps as a relaxing two-year vacation in the frozen out-backs of Uzhgorod, Ukraine. She teaches Conversational English and Country studies.

Velykiy Berezny

Steve Carpenedo came to Peace Corps from Steamboat Springs, Colorado. He received his BA in Biology and Environmental Studies from Gustavus Adolphus College in Minnesota. In Ukraine he works for Uzanski National Park near Velykiy Berezny, where he is helping set up their research department. He is also working with the local youth ecological organization.

Vyzhnitsia

Maureen Corcoran graduated in May of 2000 from Rutgers University with a B.A. in English Literature. She interned with the magazine Antiques and volunteered with the Hyacinth Aids Foundation before deciding to join the Peace Corps. She is currently serving as a TEFL volunteer with Secondary School Number One, in Vyzhnitsia, Chernivetska Oblast. Living in the Carpathian Mountains satisfies her love for outdoor activities as well as gives her the opportunity to learn from and teach some of Ukraine's finest, in this small, but forward thinking community.

Yaremche

David Barrett is working in the city of Yaremche with the Carpathian National Park, Eco-Pli NGO. Yaremche, home to more than thirty resorts, is a beautiful, small town located in Western Ukraine. Many resorts offer the opportunity to snow ski, but also flourish with spring and summer activities. David's hometown is Jonesboro, Arkansas, where he has worked as a farmer, but more recently as the Chief Financial Officer for a nationwide wholesaler of farm supplies. He has an MBA from Arkansas State University, which he received in 1988.
